ALEC launches a robotics strategy to automate 5% of its construction activities, enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and project speed.
ALEC, part of the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD), is advancing construction automation through its newly launched Robotics Strategy. This initiative aims to revolutionize construction processes. It will do so by integrating cutting-edge robotics and automation technologies into its operations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
A VISION FOR AUTOMATION IN CONSTRUCTION
ALEC revealed the Robotics Strategy during its annual Innovation Day. At the event, 14 top construction robotics companies showcased their solutions. These technologies promise to transform the construction industry. The company plans to use these technologies to boost efficiency and sustainability. They also aim to complete projects faster with these tools.
The strategy also supports ALEC’s larger Innovation Agenda. This agenda focuses on working with global robotics leaders to bring advanced robotics to the region. ALEC’s goal here is to improve the construction sector in the UAE and beyond.
ADDRESSING KEY CHALLENGES IN CONSTRUCTION
Barry Lewis, ALEC’s CEO, emphasized the importance of robotics in addressing major challenges in the construction industry. These include labour shortages, tight project deadlines, and sustainability goals. Lewis stated, “A rising tide lifts all boats and an industry-wide increase in automation will address many of our sector's most pressing issues." It will help with "enhancing sustainability, addressing skilled labour shortages, and meeting tight project details".
The company plans to automate 5% of its construction activities over the next five years using matured robotic solutions. This is a landmark achievement towards meeting industry requirements with technology.
PIONEERING ROBOTICS IN CONSTRUCTION
ALEC began testing robotics in 2017 with its Robotics Brief. Since then, it has launched nine robotic solutions in real-world settings. The Robotics Strategy extends this further, with the plan to review at least 20 robotics ideas and partnerships per year.
In the first phase, ALEC will focus on proven robotics technologies. It will also support new and emerging innovations. For this, ALEC will work closely with government agencies, universities, and robotics companies.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM ALEC’S INNOVATION DAY
At ALEC's Innovation Day event, several robotics companies showcased groundbreaking technologies:
- NYU Abu Dhabi: Explored AI and robotics for autonomous data collection in construction projects.
- HILTI: Demonstrated its Jaibot, a semi-automated robot for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installations.
- Construction Robotics: Showcased MULE, a robotic lift-assist device for handling heavy materials on construction sites.
- Angelswing: Presented a drone-based digital twin platform that optimizes project management from planning to completion.
These innovations offer practical solutions to improve safety, reduce costs, and enhance productivity on construction sites.
